PRESIDENT'S REPORT
UNION MEMBERSHIP IN

Brothers and Sisters; This is a short letter to keep you informed on the progress the Union is making on our recent endeavors to have the company adhere to our contract. These have been very frustrating times for both the members and the Union Executive. Having the many unresolved grievances at first and second stages has presented us with other alternative than to proceed with arbitrations. This is a very costly process but very necessary, as this is the only avenue we have to uphold our Collective Agreement. July and August are usually months that are generally not as busy for the Union, and we are able to have a bit of a break. This is not the case this year. We are and have been very busy working on your behalf, in both Maintenance and Operators issues. I think that some of the biggest issues right now are the Spare Board rules and the company attempt to re-interpret these rules in their favor. We have a number of grievances in and more to go to arbitration in October. We will keep you informed of the arbitration decisions that have already been heard, as soon as we receive them. We know that these decisions are not made hastily and take some time. This still leaves us with a lot of work to do, and as you know we are getting ready for negotiations to start in November. We know that this set of negotiations is going to be tough and your negotiating team will be preparing themselves to represent its membership as well as possible. We have negotiated long and hard over the many years to enable us to have the many benefits and working conditions we now enjoy. We know only too well that these benefits and working conditions are being challenged by the new BCT Executive and the Union will do everything in its power to keep our collective agreement adhered to. Unfortunately we do not have input into the employers Policies and Procedures that aren't covered under our collective agreement and in no way do they reflect our position in any of BC Transit’s decisions; a case in point being the new Trades Policy. These new restrictions send a clear message of the direction BCT is going and the regard they have for our membership. We know that these are trying times for the union and its membership and we take this time to thank you for your support in the past and for the support which will surely be needed in the future. We know only too well that the strength of our union depends on the strength and solidarity of our membership. In solidarity LR Jones President CAW Local 333
